Statement of Intent

DESIGN PRACTICE / RATIONALE

I intend to create a pop-up book/series of graphic devices this will include my own personal book of pop-up techniques and examples and a pop-up CV. The main subject matter I will be producing pop-ups for will be ancient mythology as this is a personal interest and an educational and accessible subject for primary school children, as it fits with the national curriculum. Pop-up design is a subject that I have gained a great interest in developing since the last module. I intend to develop my skills to an intermediate level so I can begin to approach children’s book illustrators and writers about collaborating with them to produce a real book.

CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES / INFLUENCES

The pop-up children’s books of Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart, alongside various other pop-up producers will be the primary influence on the majority of the work I intend to produce.
I will also research various illustrative styles to identify the most appropriate way of showing the movement and dynamism of the pop-ups whilst still being appropriate to the mythology. This will come from researching mythology, historical art and contempory children’s illustration.
Other children’s book illustrators who I will be investigating are;
• John patience
• Ron van der meer
• David carter
• Keith mosely
• Nick bantock
• David hawcock
• Jonathan Emmett
• Lucio+meera santaro
• Mark hiner
• Carol barton•
SUBJECT

The subject I will be addressing are;
• Education
• Interaction
• Character
• Movement
• History
• Mythology
RESEARCH AREAS / RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The production of a black book of pop-up techniques and mechanisms alongside notes regarding potential uses and applications will be the key aspect of the research phase of this module, I will gather these techniques from various books and websites.
I will also be visiting the national history museum in London and the leeds history museum to research the historical content of the project. If I get a Tigerprint placement over reading week I will be able to look through their considerable library of pop-up books to further my research.

DESIGN PRACTICE

The areas I will be focusing on will be pop-up design and children’s book illustration, I will also have to consider page layout and make sure any written work in the book is appropriate to its young audience. I will also be considering character design and narrative.

DESIGN CONTEXT

I am hoping for another Tigerprint placement during February reading week, I will also be visiting the London toy fair at the end of January probably with a few CV’s and my portfolio.
I have visited the ‘pop-up around the world’ exhibition and will be interviewing some primary school teachers.
